GLBT Housing Survey

I recieved the following from GLBT Housing, a group which is attempting to create a GLBT village/housing complex in our community.

-----

COMING SOON – GLBT HOUSING – a reality for Calgary! Yes, it’s true. It’s been discussed at dinner parties and at the bars, between friends and acquaintances, amongst lovers and friends. GLBThousing.ca is now taking the talk to the street – and the next step.

If you are interested (or if you know of someone who is) we need your input. Simply go to www.GLBThousing.ca and click on the link to our web survey. This data will be compiled by researchers and used to determine exactly what type of housing project the initial development will be.Please tell us what you want. We would love to know. To find out more information and to complete the web survey, go to www.GLBThousing.ca

The survey will be available from October 15, 2009 until April 15, 2010.

There will be a draw for a $400 Visa Gift Card made from all entries.

Apollo Curling/Winter Sports

Apollo's Winter Sports season is here!

Curling: My personal favourite. Although team registration is now closed, they are looking for spares (spares take the place of a team member who cannot show up). Cost is $10 per game which is a good deal when you consider ice rental. Basic equipment required: A clean pair of shoes (I recomend running shoes), a Slider (>$20) which slips over one of the shoes, and a broom ($40 and up). Games take place Saturday at the Northhill Curling club (1201, 2nd St NW). This is easily reached by the #3 bus which goes up centre street and liases with the C-Train at 7th Ave SW.

e-mail curling@apollocalgary.com

Badminton: As much as like badminton, it is on the FAR east side of the city. For those of you with a car this is no problem. For transit users like me, this means QUITE the ride and personaly I don't feel up to it after working all day. I understand that they have much better deal on rent than when they were downtown. Fair enough.

For those of you with a car, or who are otherwise interested:

St. Martha School (6020 - 4 Avenue NE)
Schedule:

Wednesdays 7 pm to 9 pm from Sep 16th til Dec 16th, 2009.

GLBT - A Community Giving Conference

I had the privlege, thanks to AIDS calgary, to attend Calgary's first GLBT - A Community Giving Conference about philantrophy and fundraising int the Gay Community, sponsored by TD Waterhouse.

There were many excellent speakers from Calgary and Toronto and even Minister Blackett mustered the nerve to show up (after the Bill 44 fiasco). I give him credit for I believe he is sincere if naive. The belief in his sincerity is not shared by everyone, but with the history of the governing PC's, that is understandable.

Anyways, I just wanted to state that I thought it was a wonderful event and I hope that it will help contribute to the increased organization and communication of the GLBT community here in Calgary.

The Dork? C'est moi.

Well sorry, I am dork (we knew this for a while). 1) Laptop melts down 2) I got into that nasty habit of the computer "remembering the user/password info, to the point that I FORGOT IT. I wrote it down on paper......somewhere, yet to be found.

O.K. Let's start from scratch, give me another chance and I will make sure this blog is actually updated.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Gay Coffee Night/Bowling/Fun!

My appologies for not updating this recently, I really must get better at it. I attended a coffee night last night for "gay calgary singles" and it was quite a sucess. There must have been at least 30 people (for Calgary that is probably every gay single in the city!); we completely took over the atmosphere at Good Earth on 11th St.

If you are interested in attending it in the future, you can get details at www.gaysinglesincalgary.org

They are also organizing Bowling Events, with the next one being on Wednesday July 8th

There are 3 lanes booked at Let's Bowl 2816- 5th ave NE.

"Wednesdays are Wacky Wednesdays..... Cover charge $5 and then shoes and all games are $1 till 9 pm....Lanes are booked for 7 pm."

Cheers!

Another great organization is Apollo, (friends in sport) which is a local gay sports league. They run a wide variety of sports leagues around the city, year round. Here is their site

http://www.apollocalgary.com/

CNC - Calgary Networking Club

Another great event which I have been going to lately is the Calgary Networking Club or CNC for short. It is sponsored by Calgary Outlink and meets the first Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm

Location: Ming (tapas restaurant) which is on the north side of 17th ave between 4th & 5th.

Cost: $10 which gets you some appetizers and a recipt (tax exemption?)

They used to bring in a guest speaker each month but they have changed to format somewhat to allow for more time to chat and mix with the other members. It's a lot of fun and a good way to meet fellow professionals within our community.

Calgary Queer Book Club

As mentioned in my earlier post, there was some discussion regarding setting up a Queer Book club in the city, well here it is! (on facebook) search for Calgary Queer Book Club (two words, sorry, I am too tech-lame to figure out how to link it).

Wednesday Coffee Night at Weeds Cafe

For those of you interested, a group has been meeting at Weeds Cafe on 20th ave NW each Wednesday night for coffee and conversation. I must commend John Iocchelli and Sadie Kay for their leadership in getting this group going. There has also been some discussion about creating a community book club which would meet on the last wednesday each month as part of the current group. The info is below.

Every Wednesday 6-9PM
Weeds Cafe,
1903 20 Avenue NW
(403) 282-7940

Welcome

While out at a weekly coffee night last week, there was some discussoin about the lack of information sharing/dessimation within the queer community in Calgary. It was suggested that perhaps a blog be set up to help with this. So, that is what I did. I hope to accomplished a few key things here.

1) Post events
2) Allow different community groups to be co-ordinate with eachother
3) Engage our community in discussion.

All I ask is that everyone treats everyone else with respect. We are too small a community to fight eachother. Here's to building a stronger community!
